The Leipzig studio of visual artist Dagmar Varady is a white cube from which her works expand. This is where her blueward work begins, in the course of which processes, studies and situations literally evolve in other gallery and exhibition spaces. An example of this is the management office of the Basel Academy of Art and Design But the expansion also takes place in the studio itself within the work groups, when the color blue is used to create surprising material and perceptual movements that lead to an aesthetic of fluidity: What can be seen right now is suddenly at stake. This inner expansion also affects the outer expansion and vice versa – a circular flow of images that opens up new spaces of experience. The artist book provides exciting insights into Varady’s Expanded Studio, presenting five groups of works with evocative titles for the first time in this composition: Expanded, Reflex, Abstract, Drawing, Process. It also becomes clear how Varady, as a color artist, oscillates between figuration and abstraction. In his essayistic accompanying text, curator and cultural publicist Paolo Bianchi focuses on particularly distinctive aspects of the work, such as the color blue, serendipity and fluidity, in order to trace the processes of form-finding in Dagmar Varady’s work.
